Hal B. Heaton, Ph.D.
Hal has been on the finance faculty at the Harvard Business School, University of Santa Clara and is currently on the faculty at Brigham Young University where he teaches corporate finance and capital markets.Following the completion of his M.B.A., Hal was a consultant with the Boston Consulting Group where he dealt with strategic planning issues for major firms in the paper, farm equipment, lumber, oil, banking, and electronics industries. The client tasks at BCG required his researching problems in portfolio selection, manufacturing cost structures, marketing, distribution, acquisitions, divestitures, and competitive interaction.
Hal has also served as an expert witness in hearings and court proceedings for cases involving business valuation. In this capacity, he has offered testimony regarding business appraisals, approaches to valuation, intangible versus tangible values, and ancillary problems associated with valuing companies.
An author of several articles, he has research interests in valuation and related topics including optimal capital structure, cost of capital, mergers/acquisitions, and capital markets. He has authored articles dealing with business appraisal techniques, the impact of taxation on valuation and firm behavior, construction of arbitrage positions using future contracts, and capital market efficiency.
Hal holds a Ph.D. in Finance from Stanford University, a Master's degree in Economics from Stanford University, an M.B.A. from Brigham Young University, and a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics/Computer Science also from Brigham Young University.
